Brown in the Marketplace

BROWN TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS (BTP) AND THE BROWN FORUM FOR ENTERPRISE (BFE) ARE CURRENTLY HOSTING START-UP CLINICS FOR BUDDING COMPANIES

What is a Start-Up Clinic?

Leaders of promising new ventures are able to trial pitch their business model and capital requirements to a select group of attendees during a free, informal lunch at the Brown Faculty Club. The knowledgeable attendees provide constructive feedback to help the presenter hone his or her pitch, which hopefully leads to greater chances of success during future, "real" pitches.

What happens during a Start-Up Clinic?

The pitch should last 15-20 minutes, which is the presentation time suggested by most venture capital and angel organizations. Presenters typically use PowerPoint slides as enhancement, though this is not a requirement. Following the presentation, there is a Q&A session. After the lunch, the attendees are invited to provide written comments to the host, Charles Kingdon, Associate Vice President of BTP. Charles and his assistant summarize the comments into one anonymous document, which is forwarded to the presenter(s). This document can be used to guide any future presentations to meet the standards of most investor groups. These comments are held completely confidential and are only viewed by Charles, his assistant, and the presenter(s).

Who attends the Start-Up Clinics?

Attendees of the Clinics consist of BFE Sponsors, guests suggested by the Sponsors or BFE and BTP staff with relevant expertise, and members of the BFE and BTP staff. Each Clinic is hosted by Charles Kingdon. The attendance typically consists of a mix of attorneys, accountants, experienced entrepreneurs, experts in the focus company's specific business field, members of local economic organizations, and possibly investors. If you are interested in attending a Start-Up Clinic, please become a Sponsor. Click here for more information on BFE Sponsorship.

Who can be the focus of a Start-Up Clinic?
