The Vice President for Research is pleased to offer a number of research funding opportunities for Brown Faculty. Research Seed Funds and Salomon Awards are competitive grants distributed directly to faculty researchers and administered by OVPR. This office also distributes Departmental Research Funds for the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (HRFs) to departments.

Research Seed Funding was created to give faculty a competitive edge in their applications for large-scale, multidisciplinary, multi-investigator grants. With an annual budget of $400,000 in 2007-2008, the Vice President for Research awarded six grants from 21 applications.
The 2008-2009 application deadline for Seed Funding is Wednesday, December 3, 2008.

Designed to recognize excellence in scholarship, The Richard B. Salomon Faculty Research Awards fund exceptional faculty research projects. With an annual budget of $200,000 in 2007-2008, the Vice President for Research awarded 13 grants from 39 applications.
The 2008-2009 application deadline for Salomon Awards is Monday, November 3, 2008.

Departmental Research Funds for the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences support faculty research in departments and fields in the arts, humanities and social sciences with limited external funding opportunities. Each department chair has the responsibility of soliciting brief written proposals from interested faculty, managing a merit-based review process, and awarding funds to applicants. Permissible expenses include, but are not limited to, travel to research conferences or archives, preparation of manuscripts and articles, and securing permissions. In fiscal year 2008, $300,000 was distributed to 32 departments.

Cost-sharing funds are intended to help secure specific external funding opportunities or to enable certain scholarly endeavors.  Most commonly, cost-sharing for external funding opportunities defrays a portion of the cost for equipment purchases, for capital expenses associated with placing equipment, for complementary equipment, or for technical staff to operate equipment. For other scholarly endeavors, funds defray expenses for various faculty activities where external funding is limited.
Cost-sharing funds, requested by the downloadable form (see column at right), are considered on a case-by-case basis.
