Samuel Perry examines the revolutionary cultures of 20th century Japan and Korea. Focusing on the proletarian avant-garde, women's fiction and children's literature, his current manuscript, Recasting Red Culture: Childhood, Korea and the Avant-garde in Proletarian Japan, shows how proletarian cultural workers in the 20s and 30s reconfigured culture into a vital social practice, opening up new critical spaces in the intersections of class, childhood, gender and ethnicity.

My career in the academy has taken me from my undergraduate years as a student at Brown on to study abroad programs in Japan, South Korea, and Germany. After working in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, for several years and then as a Japanese teacher at Phillips Exeter Academy, I went on to graduate school at the University of Chicago, spend several more years of study in Seoul, Sapporo, and Tokyo, and then complete a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University. After several years teaching at Brown, next year I will be taking advantage of a grant from the Japan Foundation to spend a year of sabbatical working in archives throughout Japan. An avid translator of Japanese and Korean literature, I am thrilled to have just received a 2013 Translation Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. |
