John J. DiGiovanna Dermatology Dr. DiGiovanna studies inherited skin disorders and new therapies for skin disorders. With investigators at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) he studies DNA repair. In xeroderma pigmentosum, failure to repair UV induced DNA damage leads to skin cancer and neurologic degeneration. Trichothiodystrophy is a related disorder of hair with photosensitivity and developmental delay. Understanding these disorders will help clarify the role of DNA repair as guardian of the genome, and in carcinogenesis and neurologic degeneration.
